Today we announced the SunSmart Busselton 100 triathlon will be the marquee event which will take place at the SunSmart Busselton Festival of Triathlon 30 April 2022, in Busselton, Western Australia.

Incorporating the iconic Jetty, Tuart Forrest and the pristine Geographe Bay, Busselton will once again showcase its natural beauty as participants take on the 2km swim, 80km cycle and 18km run. The Busselton Festival of Triathlon, now in its 21st year, will see the Busselton 100 event take place of the previously named, IRONMAN 70.3 Busselton and Busselton Half Ironman.

“The Festival of Triathlon is an iconic event, and we are excited to launch our new event concept (Busselton 100) with the community. The event is owned and run by Triathlon WA, the State Sporting Association, and provides an opportunity for the local community, intrastate and interstate participants to take part in multiple events over the weekend. Busselton is a race destination, that is synonymous with triathlon, and we are excited to continue to host this event in years to come” said Ashleigh Apps, Executive Director of Triathlon WA.

With the creation of the Busselton 100, and the addition of two other new events, Busselton Foreshore Triathlon and the Busselton Fun Run, the Festival has opportunities for all levels of participation over the weekend.

“The Busselton Festival of Triathlon has long been an icon on the WA triathlon calendar and a memorable end to the season for the entire West Australian triathlon community. Busselton has long been a home away from home for me and as the event takes a new shape, I look forward to 2022 and defending my state long course championship at the Busselton 100!” reining State Long Course champion Matt Burton said.

Jason Rhine, Age Group triathlete and 10-time Busselton Festival of Triathlon participant, stated “The Festival has been the most iconic race on the event calendar and a great way to wrap up the end of the season. What I love most about the festival is that it appeals to everyone from your pro triathletes, serious age groupers, first timers, corporate teams, families and kids. After completing 10 long course Busselton races, I can’t wait to race the new and improved Busselton 100 concept hopefully over the next 10 years and beyond.”

About Triathlon Western Australia

Triathlon Western Australia (Triathlon WA) was established in 1986 as the governing body to oversee and promote the progress of the sports of Triathlon, Duathlon, Aquathlon and Multi-Sport in WA.

Triathlon WA is a non-profit organisation and is affiliated to the national governing body, Triathlon Australia. A sport once seen as extreme is now accessible to everyone with introductory distances for novice competitors from 200m swim, 6km bike 2km run, right through to the Iron distance.

Through our work, we aim to connect and inspire the community to a lifestyle of multi-sport, and promote the triathlon values of belonging, health, enjoyment, respect, achievement and integrity. Triathlon is a sport for life and is well positioned to play a pivotal role in shaping people’s health and fitness habits from an early age.

Event History

The Busselton Festival of Triathlon has a proud and illustrious history in Western Australia. The iconic event continues the history of the WA State Long Course Triathlon Championship which began in Midland in 1983 with 49 participants. The race was held in Midland for two years before moving to Rottnest in 1985. Distances at that time included a 2km swim, 54km cycle and 20km run. In 2001, the event made the bold move to Margaret River; however, it quickly became apparent that the event had also outgrown that venue with its increasing popularity.

In 2002, WA’s Half Ironman Triathlon found another new and exciting home in the beautiful SouthWest town of Busselton with a course featuring calm, crystal-clear waters in the swim, flat, fast roads through the Tuart Forrest and varying scenery on the cycle and a flat run along the beautiful Busselton foreshore.

In 2010, the event became an Ironman 70.3 Triathlon. With this the event received global branding via the World Triathlon Corporation.

In 2022, the event will no longer carry the IRONMAN branding, instead, a new event brand for the Busselton 100 triathlon has been created. The event will be focused around showcasing the WA regional town of Busselton to the wider WA market along with community engagement and connection.

With the ongoing support of the Busselton community, stakeholders, volunteers and competitors, the future of this event remains strong.  The 2022 event will be the 21st year of hosting this event in Busselton.

Priority registrations open 12 noon Thursday 26th August for Triathlon Australia members only. General entries open 12noon Wednesday 1st September!

See you on the start line 🙂
